At the Sussex Cancer Fund, we know that the environment in which patients receive care plays a significant role in their overall experience. The main waiting room at the Sussex Cancer Centre had served countless patients and their loved ones over the years, but like any well-used space, it had started to show signs of wear and tear. The furniture was tired, and the layout, while functional, felt a little awkward and uninviting. It was clear that a refresh was needed to create a more comfortable and welcoming space for everyone who walked through the doors.
Improving Patient Experience
Breathing New Life into the Space
With a simple but effective makeover, we set out to transform the waiting area into a brighter, more calming environment. A fresh coat of paint instantly revitalised the room, giving it a cleaner, more uplifting feel. We carefully selected new furniture that not only provided comfort but also allowed for better use of space, ensuring that more patients could sit comfortably without feeling cramped.
To further enhance the atmosphere, we introduced faux plants – a small touch that made a big difference. Adding greenery to the space helped soften the environment, making it feel less clinical and more like a place of care and reassurance. The result was a waiting area that felt open, fresh, and much more inviting.

This transformation wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about creating a space that supports patients emotionally as well as physically. For many, a visit to the Cancer Centre can be daunting, and having a calm, comfortable space to wait can make a real difference to their experience. The changes we made ensure that patients and their families can relax in a more pleasant environment while waiting for appointments or treatment.
