Making the Cancer Journey More Comfortable
Making the Cancer Journey More Comfortable
At Sussex Cancer Fund, we believe that care is about more than medical treatment. It is about comfort, dignity and moments of normality during a very challenging time.
That is why we fund a range of services and thoughtful extras that help people feel more at ease and supported throughout their cancer journey.
Warm drinks to soothe and comfort
A simple cup of tea or coffee can make a real difference. We fund good quality teas, coffees and other hot drinks in treatment and waiting areas so patients, families and carers can pause and take a breath. Sharing a drink can encourage conversation, ease nerves and create a small sense of normality in a clinical setting.
Research shows that stress can affect how people cope with treatment. While a hot drink is a small gesture, reducing anxiety and helping someone feel cared for can support overall wellbeing at a time when it matters most.

Radios in waiting rooms
Radios in waiting rooms
Waiting for appointments or results can feel overwhelming. We fund radios in waiting areas to provide gentle background music or familiar voices.
Sound can soften a clinical environment and provide a helpful distraction, making waiting times feel less intense and helping people feel more settled.
Dignity gowns for radiotherapy patients
Radiotherapy can leave people feeling exposed and vulnerable. We provide specially designed dignity gowns that offer better coverage and comfort than standard hospital gowns. These garments help people feel more secure and respected during treatment sessions.
Feeling physically comfortable can reduce anxiety and help someone approach treatment with greater confidence.

Magazines, puzzles and gentle distractions
Magazines, puzzles and gentle distractions
We fund magazines, puzzles and other small distractions for clinic spaces. Having something positive to focus on, even for a short while, can help take the mind off worries.
A crossword, a magazine article or a simple puzzle can provide a moment of lightness and mental relief during long appointments.
Supportive chemotherapy chairs
Chemotherapy sessions can last several hours. We fund specialist chemotherapy chairs that are more comfortable and supportive than standard seating. These chairs help reduce physical discomfort and allow patients to rest more easily throughout treatment.
Comfort during long sessions can make a significant difference to the overall experience.

Cold caps and hair care support
Cold caps and hair care support
Changes to hair during treatment can affect how someone feels about themselves. We fund cold caps, which can help reduce hair loss for some patients, along with quality hair conditioner to support scalp and hair care.
This support is about more than appearance. It is about confidence, identity and helping people feel more like themselves.
The Difference Your Support Makes
These are not luxuries. They are thoughtful additions that genuinely improve the treatment environment and patient experience across Sussex.
Recently, thanks to our supporters, we have funded additional chemotherapy chairs to improve comfort during long treatment sessions. We have invested in cold cap equipment and hair care products to support patients who wish to try to reduce hair loss. We have provided dignity gowns for radiotherapy departments so patients feel more secure and respected during treatment.
We have also supported waiting areas with radios, reading materials and simple comforts such as quality teas and coffees. These small touches help reduce anxiety, create a calmer atmosphere and make clinical spaces feel more human.
Research consistently shows that reducing stress and improving emotional wellbeing can positively influence how people cope with treatment. When someone feels calmer and more comfortable, they are better able to engage with their care and focus on their recovery.
Everything we fund is raised here in Sussex and stays in Sussex. Your support directly improves the experience of local patients receiving care in the units you know.
Thank you for helping us make the cancer journey more bearable, one thoughtful detail at a time.
