Despite facing a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, Nuala Smyth, an avid marathon runner, geared up to participate in the Brighton Marathon on April 7th, 2024, marking her 60th birthday weekend and her 200th marathon. Her decision to lace up her running shoes amidst her cancer journey was not merely a personal triumph but a testament to her resilience and unwavering spirit.
Nuala’s cancer story began in June 2023 when she received the life-altering diagnosis. Undeterred by the daunting challenge ahead, she pressed on, squeezing in a couple of marathons before commencing six weeks of rigorous radiotherapy and chemotherapy in August 2023.
“When faced with the news, my initial reaction was, ‘How inconvenient!’ followed by concerns about parking,” Nuala shared candidly. “Cancer is such a monumental ordeal that sometimes you find yourself focusing on trivial matters just to cope.”
In the midst of uncertainties and apprehensions, Nuala found comfort from the Sussex Cancer Fund, a local charity which offered invaluable support to cancer patients by helping to alleviate some of the challenges they faced. Sussex Cancer Fund did all it could to help make the experience of undergoing cancer treatment just a little less stressful for people. This included providing vital equipment, such as scanners, modesty gowns, and drip stands, offering relaxing complimentary therapies, and making oncology waiting rooms more welcoming with comfortable furniture and free refreshments.
“I am immensely grateful for the support and care provided by the Sussex Cancer Fund,” Nuala expressed. “Their dedication to improving the patient experience underscored the importance of compassionate healthcare.”
As Nuala continued her journey, she stayed committed to fundraising for the Sussex Cancer Fund, who had helped her and many others through their cancer treatment pathways. All the sponsorship money Nuala raised for her 200th marathon that weekend has been donated to the charity to help them continue making such an important difference to the lives of local people.
“On April 7th, as I traversed the streets of Brighton adorned with a cow hat, I urged everyone to join me in supporting those affected by cancer in our region,” Nuala said. “Together, let us rally behind organisations like the Sussex Cancer Fund, offering hope and assistance to individuals navigating their cancer journey.”
Nuala’s determination to run her 200th marathon served as a poignant reminder of the indomitable human spirit. Her story inspired not only fellow runners but individuals worldwide, uniting them in the shared pursuit of overcoming adversity and supporting those in need.
