A day of fundraising at Plumpton Racecourse has raised over £50,000 for local charity the Sussex Cancer Fund.

For this year’s annual Sussex Day on Sunday (3), Plumpton hosted a charity lunch with the county’s most successful horse racing operation – the Horsham-based Moore family – featuring trainer Gary, jockeys Jamie and Josh, and TV presenter Hayley.

The Sussex Cancer Fund is a cause close to the heart of Jamie Moore whose wife Lucie was treated for breast cancer in 2020. Moore organised for all the jockeys on the day to wear pink breeches to raise money and awareness for the Sussex Cancer Fund and the West Sussex Breast Care Centre, where Lucie was treated.

Through a variety of fundraising methods including an auction and raffle, the Sussex Raceday has raised a fantastic amount of money so far, with donations still pouring in.

David Witham, Fund Manager for the Sussex Cancer Fund, is delighted with how much money was raised on Sunday.

“We can’t thank Plumpton Racecourse, the Moore family, and the racing community enough for their generosity and kindness,” said Witham.

“We are a small charity that covers the whole of Sussex and we punch well above our weight in how much we achieve.

“The fundraising efforts of Sussex Raceday surpassed our expectations. Our aim for the event was to buy specialist equipment for the West Sussex Breast Screening Service, we never dreamed we would achieve this and more.”

Dan Thompson, Chief Executive of Plumpton Racecourse, added:

“Sussex Day is a race day we really look forward to each season in celebrating what our great county has to offer, but this year’s event was really special.

“It took a bit of putting together but people were incredibly generous and working with both the Moore family, particularly Jamie and Lucie, as well as the Sussex Cancer Fund and their team made the day what it was.

“Everyone on track seemed to have a great day’s racing, so it is a day and theme we’d like to continue into the future.”
