In the next of our series ‘Spotlight on staff,’ we caught up with Katherine Perry, Senior Healthcare Assistant, at University Hospitals Sussex, to find out a little more about her role and how the Sussex Cancer Fund has helped.
What is your role at the hospital?
My role as a Senior Healthcare Assistant is to support patients receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy through the Out-patients Department.
How long have you worked here?
13 years
What is the best bit about your job?
I love making a patient smile, thinking outside the box, asking ‘How can we change this, make it better?’
What is your connection with the Sussex Cancer Fund?
My connection with the Sussex Cancer Fund is working in a department that regularly receives support from the charity and I try to help raise awareness of the charity.
How has the Sussex Cancer Fund helped you?
The Sussex Cancer Fund has provided an amazing amount of equipment to make patients more comfortable and making manual handling much easier for staff. They have also provided nebulisers amongst other equipment for patients.
Have you done any fundraising for the Sussex Cancer Fund? If so, what did you do?
I have supported the Sussex Cancer Fund by contributing and taking part in many of their fundraising events like the Rye Feastival, the Tennis Tournament and Christmas activities. However, I have also taken a very hands-on approach
by making small Easter and Christmas Gifts for sale and more recently made the front garden of the Sussex Cancer Centre much nicer by painting the benches and using donations from Ferring Nurseries.
How the Sussex Cancer Fund has made a difference?
The Sussex Cancer Fund continues to make a difference by providing the free car park for patients and generally making patients more comfortable, with things like the electric patient trolleys for the radiotherapy department and the specialist chemotherapy chairs.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our followers?
I really enjoy being creative and making a difference, from painting to gardening, I like to get involved with activities that will improve our patients time at the centre, the Sussex Cancer Fund helps us to do that. In addition to helping make the centre a more comfortable place, whether through fundraising for the Sussex Cancer Fund or rolling my sleeves up and maintaining the gardens, I am always willing to give a listening ear when it’s needed.
