Sussex Cancer Fund Expands Patient Services with Innovative Vocal Therapy Programme

The Sussex Cancer Fund is delighted to announce the addition of Vocal Therapy to its portfolio of patient support services. This innovative programme, delivered in partnership with Vocal Connections, offers patients a unique and creative approach to emotional and physical recovery through the power of voice.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Vocal Connections, developed by Tina Warnock, HCPC-registered Music Therapist and Vocal Psychotherapist, provides a safe and supportive environment for cancer patients to explore their voices as a tool for self-expression, relaxation, and connection. Since its launch in June 2024, the programme has run two six-week group sessions at the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton and five follow-up groups, engaging a total of 13 participants to date.

Transformative Feedback

Participants have reported significant benefits, including reduced anxiety, improved self-awareness, and a sense of community. One participant shared, “Vocal Connections has supported me during a time of transition, helping me prepare to go back to work and move forward.” Another noted, “It’s been a very positive experience. I felt calmer and de-stressed after each session”.

The project uses bespoke before-and-after questionnaires and the General Anxiety Score (GAD-7) to evaluate its impact, with detailed quantitative results expected later in the programme. The initial feedback reflects the profound potential of vocal therapy to enhance recovery and well-being.

Funding Through Community Support

This pioneering programme is funded by the Sussex Cancer Fund but delivered through Vocal Connections. As a community-driven charity, Sussex Cancer Fund relies on donations and partnerships to provide vital services for cancer patients across Sussex. The introduction of Vocal Therapy reflects the Fund’s commitment to offering diverse and innovative approaches to cancer care.

Looking Ahead

As the programme grows, the Sussex Cancer Fund is eager to explore additional opportunities to expand Vocal Therapy and other holistic services. By fostering creativity and connection, these initiatives aim to support patients at every stage of their recovery journey.
