Led by MA Creative Writing student and former mental health nurse Deborah Humphrey, alongside MA Creative Writing alumna Karina Patfield, this initiative provides a safe, inclusive space for people to share their stories, connect with others, and explore the emotional realities of a cancer diagnosis.

With support from the Sussex Cancer Fund and the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC), Words from the Waiting Room offers free community workshops to individuals who have experienced cancer in any capacity—whether as a patient, survivor, or supporter. These sessions aim to provide comfort, encourage self-expression, and build a sense of solidarity through creative storytelling.

The first workshop will take place at The Friend’s Meeting House in Brighton on 25 March, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, with a second session at The HEART Community Info Hub in Hastings Town Hall on 1 April, also from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Participants can sign up online

Transforming the Waiting Room Experience

Waiting rooms in oncology clinics can often feel like places of stress, silence, and uncertainty. Words from the Waiting Room seeks to change this perception by offering an opportunity for creative expression outside of clinical settings. Many individuals hesitate to share their emotions with medical professionals, fearing how their words might affect their care. These workshops provide a dedicated space where participants can process their thoughts and experiences on their own terms.

Through guided writing prompts and collage techniques, attendees can explore their feelings in a way that suits them best. This approach ensures accessibility for everyone, regardless of writing experience.

A Project Backed by Research and Compassion

Once the workshops are complete, the creative works produced will be shared with the Sussex Cancer Research Centre, helping to build a deeper understanding of patient experiences and contributing to ongoing cancer research.

Speaking about the initiative, Deborah Humphrey said:
“We have seen firsthand how difficult it can be to sit in an oncology waiting room, facing uncertainty. As creative writers, we understand the therapeutic power of writing, and we wanted to provide a space where people can explore their emotions and share their experiences in a meaningful way.”

Karina Patfield added:
“We are so grateful to the Sussex Cancer Fund and the Sussex Cancer Research Centre for believing in this project. Our passion is to help people who may not usually write, and we know that creative writing can have a hugely positive impact on wellbeing.”

Dr Simon Mitchell, Director of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre, said:
“The SCRC is incredibly proud to support Words from the Waiting Room. This project aligns with our mission to ensure cancer research is patient-focused, and we are excited to see how it amplifies the voices of those affected by cancer.”

Professor Melanie Flint, Professor of Stress and Cancer Research at the University of Brighton and co-director of the SCRC, echoed this sentiment:
“This is a unique and impactful project that brings the experiences of people with cancer to the forefront. The art pieces created will serve as a vital bridge between researchers and those with lived experience of cancer, fostering meaningful conversations.”

Building a Lasting Legacy

Beyond the workshops, Deborah and Karina aim to explore ways to exhibit participants’ work, ensuring that their voices continue to resonate with future patients, families, and healthcare professionals. This project represents a shared commitment to improving the lives of those affected by cancer through creativity, connection, and compassion.

The Sussex Cancer Fund is dedicated to funding innovative projects like Words from the Waiting Room, ensuring that individuals facing cancer receive not only medical support but also emotional and psychological resources that can enhance their wellbeing.
