Sussex Cancer Fund Supports Haematology Department’s Move to New Facility

The Sussex Cancer Fund is pleased to announce its crucial support in the relocation of the Haematology Department at University Sussex Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to a newly renovated, state-of-the-art facility. This move has seen the department transition from a small, cramped, and dark area, where patients often had to wait in corridors, to a modern space spread across three floors, offering much-needed comfort and space. Currently, two of the three floors have been fully commissioned, with the third floor set to open soon and will increase capacity. The department, which treats many patients with blood cancers, now has the capability to better serve its community, with dedicated spaces for both outpatients and inpatients.
The Sussex Cancer Fund’s contributions include the provision of chemotherapy and treatment chairs, a comfortable waiting area, a staff room, and a quiet room. In addition, the Fund has helped equip the department with essential equipment, ensuring that the space is fully functional and supportive for both patients and staff.
David Witham, Fund Manager for the Sussex Cancer Fund, expressed his delight about the move:
“We are absolutely delighted to have been able to support this incredible move and to help get an area back into use that will directly benefit so many patients. It’s truly heartwarming to know that the Haematology Department is now able to provide a more spacious and welcoming environment for people undergoing treatment. Our team is committed to helping make the hospital experience better, and this is a huge step forward.”
Leigh Harvey, Divisional Director of Nursing & AHPs for the Cancer Division, praised the Fund’s role in easing the transition:
“The support from the Sussex Cancer Fund has been invaluable in helping us to transition from the old site to this new, larger space. Their contributions have made the move much smoother and allowed us to ensure that the Haematology Department functions seamlessly across the two floors already in use. The Fund’s commitment to supporting our patients and staff during this process has been outstanding.”
In celebration of the move and as a token of appreciation for the hard work of staff during the transition, the Sussex Cancer Fund also provided nearly 150 donuts and 10 large pizzas to help ease the team into the new facility and express gratitude for their dedication and effort. The Sussex Cancer Fund is proud to be a vital partner in improving care for patients at the University Sussex Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and continues to support the local community with much-needed funding for cancer services.
