In a collaborative effort to enhance the care and dignity of patients, the Sussex Cancer Fund and My University Hospitals Sussex Charity have jointly funded a £30,000 refurbishment project at the chemotherapy suite in Hurstwood Park, Haywards Heath Hospital. The project involved relocating a patient toilet from the waiting room to a more discreet area within the hospital, offering a more private and comfortable experience for those undergoing treatment.
The previous location of the toilet within the waiting room posed challenges for patients who often felt uncomfortable or self-conscious. Recognising the need for a more thoughtful design, this project utilised a disused space within the hospital, transforming it into a modern and accessible facility. By moving the toilet to a new location, patients can now enjoy greater dignity and comfort during their visits to the chemotherapy suite.
This innovative project was made possible through a 50/50 funding partnership between the Sussex Cancer Fund and My University Hospitals Sussex Charity. This collaboration demonstrates the power of working together to maximise the impact of charitable donations, ensuring that every contribution goes further in improving the patient experience.
David Witham, Fund Manager of the Sussex Cancer Fund, shared his thoughts on the project:
“Our ethos at the Sussex Cancer Fund is rooted in improving patient treatment, comfort, and dignity, and this project is a prime example of that commitment. It was our initiative to address this important but often overlooked aspect of patient care, recognising the need for a more private and comfortable space for those undergoing cancer treatment. We are grateful to My University Hospitals Sussex Charity for agreeing to contribute and help bring our vision to life, and to our generous supporters, whose donations enable us to lead impactful projects like this.”
The Sussex Cancer Fund extends heartfelt thanks to its supporters for their generosity, which has been instrumental in making this project a reality. “Your contributions not only enhance the facilities at Hurstwood Park but also reaffirm the importance of patient-centred care in the fight against cancer.”
