The Sussex Cancer Fund is delighted to be hosting one of the open garden charity days on Wednesday 24th August at Bates Green Garden.
Also home to the famous Arlington Bluebell woods, Bates Green Garden is open every Wednesday throughout the Summer with charities taking it in turns to host. The Sussex Cancer Fund will be there to welcome you and will be running the cafe with help from our fabulous volunteers on the 24th of August.
Bates Green Garden was designed and planted by the late Carolyn McCutchan over a period of many years from 1968. This 1.5-acre garden surrounds the farmhouse, which was originally a gamekeeper’s cottage built circa 1814. The soil is neutral pH heavy Weald clay.
This garden is most easily described as an English Garden planted in a naturalistic style. It sits comfortably within its rural surroundings.
Carolyn was an acclaimed Plantswoman and her garden was featured in publications such as The English Garden, The Sunday Telegraph, Homes & Gardens, and Homes & Antiques to name but a few. Bates Green Garden attracted visitors from all around the globe and was annually opened for the NGS and various horticultural societies and groups.
