About Us
Sussex Cancer Fund works in partnership with the NHS, clinicians, and local communities to improve cancer treatment, services and patient experience across Sussex. By funding vital equipment, research and patient support initiatives, we help ensure that people affected by cancer receive the highest quality of care.
We are now seeking a new trustee with a strong interest or background in governance to help us maintain the highest standards of accountability, transparency and strategic oversight as we grow and evolve.
The Role
As a Governance-Focused Trustee, you will play a key role in strengthening the charity’s governance framework and ensuring Sussex Cancer Fund operates safely, ethically and in full compliance with charity and regulatory requirements.
Your support and oversight will help us:
- Maintain robust governance systems
- Reviewing, updating and maintaining our governance documents and policies
- Comply with charity law, NHS governance arrangements, data protection, and other regulations
- Ensure clear, effective decision-making
- Deliver our mission with integrity and transparency
This is a fantastic opportunity to use your governance insight and skills to support a charity that directly improves the lives of people undergoing cancer treatment in Sussex.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, including those who have not previously served as trustees. Training and a full induction will be provided.
We would particularly value experience or interest in any of the following:
- Charity governance, compliance, or regulation
- Charity law, employment law, or NHS regulatory frameworks
- Governance
- Information governance or data protection
- Policy development or quality assurance
Most importantly, we are looking for individuals who are:
- Committed to the mission of improving cancer care
- Able to think strategically and assess risks objectively
- Comfortable asking challenging questions in a constructive manner
- Able to dedicate time to strengthen and uphold high governance and ethical standards
We are committed to diversity and strongly encourage applications from people with lived experience of cancer, as well as candidates from backgrounds currently under-represented in governance roles. We welcome applicants from outside of Sussex.
Time Commitment
Approximately 4–6 board meetings per year (in person) occasional committee work and time to review papers and contribute to governance improvement. Meetings are held in Sussex or online.
3-5 days commitment per month (minimum) to audit, create and maintain our governance
This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.
