Dr Joanna Stokoe MRCP FRCR MD, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Sussex Cancer Centre is swimming the English Channel to raise money for Sussex Cancer Fund and the Roy Castle Lung Foundation. The swim is scheduled for September but is very dependent on weather conditions and tides. Jo will start from Dover Marina, and swim to Cap Gris Nez in France. This distance is 18.2 nautical miles which is approximately 21 land miles. There are 2,000 yards or 1852 meters to a nautical mile. The swim is likely to take anywhere between 12 and 20 hours and will be accompanied by the pilot safety boat, Louise Jane.
Good Luck and thank you, Jo, from the Sussex Cancer Fund!
Jo’s Story
“I plan to swim the English Channel solo this summer to raise money for 2 charities – Roy Castle Lung Foundation and Sussex Cancer Fund. In my work as a clinical oncologist, these charities provide support to patients during a very difficult time and I am grateful for any donation that you can give. I am not a sporty person but have always loved swimming and being in and around the water. Living in Hove, I look at the Channel every day and sea swimming in all weathers is my way of switching off . I have been preparing for this huge endurance swim over the last 2 -3 years. It’s a 21 mile route but tides and currents mean you swim further. Knowing I have your support will really help me dig deep when everything starts to hurt! I’ll be starting in Dover and I have covered the cost of my pilot boat, Louise Jane, and all CSA registration fees so all monies raised will be split evenly between the 2 charities.”
