The Sussex Cancer Fund and My University Hospitals Sussex Charity have once again joined forces to improve patient care by co-funding the purchase of advanced sarcoma immobilisation equipment. This £22,000 project, funded equally by the two charities, will enhance the precision and comfort of radiotherapy treatments for sarcoma patients across Sussex. The equipment will be utilised at the radiotherapy suites at the Sussex Cancer Centre in Brighton and Eastbourne Hospital.
Sarcomas, rare cancers of the bone and soft tissues, account for less than 1% of all cancer cases. However, their treatment requires highly specialised equipment and techniques to ensure the best outcomes. The new immobilisation boards, costing £5,500 each, are designed to optimise the delivery of radiotherapy to patients with sarcomas affecting their arms or legs. By ensuring precise positioning, the boards enable clinicians to target tumours more accurately while minimising exposure to healthy tissues.
Advanced Technology for Enhanced Precision
The sarcoma immobilisation boards are state-of-the-art tools made from lightweight carbon fibre, a material that allows radiation to pass through with minimal interference. These boards are designed to fit seamlessly onto treatment couches, “locking in” at pre-defined locations to ensure consistent positioning. Multiple reference points on the boards enable the secure attachment of specialised supports, including leg bridges and limb restraints, to position the affected and non-affected limbs accurately during treatment.
Rebecca Furner, Head of Radiotherapy Treatment Planning, highlighted the significance of this equipment:
“This advanced immobilisation equipment allows us to deliver modern, rotational treatments with exceptional precision, ensuring we target the tumour effectively while safeguarding the surrounding areas. The support from the Sussex Cancer Fund and My University Hospitals Sussex Charity has been invaluable in bringing this equipment to our radiotherapy suites.”
The Power of Collaboration
This project exemplifies the impact of collaborative charity funding. By working together, the Sussex Cancer Fund and My University Hospitals Sussex Charity have been able to pool resources, ensuring that advanced, life-changing equipment is accessible to patients across Sussex.
David Witham, Fund Manager for the Sussex Cancer Fund, said:
“The Sussex Cancer Fund is committed to improving patient care through innovation and collaboration. This project, demonstrates how working together with My University Hospitals Sussex Charity allows us to make the most of every donation. We are proud to have brought this advanced technology to the region, enhancing the quality of care for patients with sarcomas.”
